A student’s emotional health should be part of the education process

I believe that in order to have any measure of success one of the things that should to be in order is your emotional state and, oftentimes, that state isn’t given as much attention as other areas. For instance, individuals spend a lot of time and attention on their physical appearance, on their intellect and other areas, but ignore what’s happening within their head and heart.

Coping with college by connecting the mind and the heart

College life is filled with one activity after the next one that can stretch you out to the max. By using a few personal techniques and starting now, you can develop a lifelong habit of self-care that will make sure you aren’t overly stressed, physically fatigued, mentally anguished or emotionally distraught. Begin now and you’ll be balanced and stress-free not only in school, but in your future professional, social and family life.

Programs on a dime

JT

We’re now entering the second-half of the academic year and many of you are probably realizing that your programming budgets aren’t taking you as far as they used to. With deep budget cuts affecting universities across the nation, programming and student activities budgets can sometimes be the easiest for administrators to cut. But we still need to create fun, effective and educational programs for students. Below are some strategies that programmers use on my campus to cut costs and still run thousands of successful programs.

Finding Glee in “Glee!”

Favorite moments so far: “Don’t Stop Believing” from the pilot episode; the football team scoring a touchdown while dancing to “Put a Ring On It;” the Glee Club version during an all school assembly of “Push It” and then Sue’s reaction… “That was the most disturbing thing I have ever seen and I am including an elementary school production of ‘Hair’;” the Slurpee episode, Kristin Chenoweth, and the “mash-up” competition.

Natural Energy Boosters for College Chaos! Strategy # 2

You know it; it is the voice that says “don’t go partying tonight because you have to get up early tomorrow for class and it will be the final exam.” Or, it may be your body screaming “I’m tired! I’m exhausted! I need to get some rest or I won’t make it much further!” When your body starts to “talk to you” in a negative way, it is past due time for you to listen.

Serving during Welcome Week at Cuyahoga Community College

This blog is not about any of those programs, but, rather, about what I did on my “off” day in Cleveland on Thursday, September 10. It was really awesome for me to be called on to serve and to dive in and do it and have fun. I believe that service to others is one of the most valuable things we can do.

The secret to a long and happy life…according to Dr. Andy

I truly value the opinion of elders because they’ve been there and done that and have such a different perspective. I noticed an older gentleman dancing to his heart’s content. I’m sure he was in his 70s, but the energy he exuded was so youthful.I asked him what was his secret for a long and happy life. His advice was simple and profound:

Overcoming your fear of… Hockey?

I’ve come up with a couple tips for students and student leaders that have been very helpful when reaching out to a new group. Recently I started playing pickup ice hockey and I applied the tips to help me overcome my fear of joining this new group.

New Student Orientation Programs: The Key to Student Success!

I am a first generation college graduate, cum laude, who grew up in a mobile home in a trailer park on the side of a state highway, who only was able to afford to go to school because my parents were divorced and my mother made so little money that I qualified for government grants and loans. I have worked with thousands of college students over the years and my experiences pinpoint three keys to student success…

Those Damn Tomatoes Again!

Right up until he passed away at 92, my grandpa and I used to do lunch often. His usual order was a BLT sandwich. Just to be clear, that is a sandwich with bacon, lettuce and tomato – a BLT. Every time the sandwich arrived he’d peek inside and say, “Those damn tomatoes – every time!” I’d be chuckling and thinking to myself, “Grandpa, wouldn’t you expect that a BLT would have some ‘T’ on it?” I just never said it out loud.
